Open For Discussion

There is a Native American proverb which says: “To have joy one must share it. Happiness was born a twin.” We agree. We get to know books and one another so much better when we share ideas. Writing we didn’t like becomes much more interesting as we see it from different viewpoints. Please join us!

“Open for Discussion” is a monthly drop-in book discussion welcome to all. Two groups meet monthly from September -November and January-June, on the third Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. and the third Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Our informal discussions last one hour with book related snacks.

Adult Book Discussion is open to all. No registration required. Meetings last one hour.

American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House
by Jon Meacham

We get the Indian fighter and hero of New Orleans facing down South Carolina radicals’ efforts to nullify federal laws they found unacceptable, speaking the words of democracy even if his banking and other policies strengthened local oligarchies, and doing nothing to protect southern Indians from their land-hungry white neighbors. For the first time, with Jackson, demagoguery became presidential, and his Democratic Party deepened its identification with Southern slavery.

Olive Kitteridge
by Elizabeth Strout

At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large. As the townspeople grapple with their problems, mild and dire, Olive is brought to a deeper understanding of herself and her life – sometimes painfully, but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers profound insights into the human condition —- its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the endurance it requires.
