Sewing & Embroidery Machines

Need a place to do some sewing? Try adding a personal touch to all sorts of items with our embroidery machine too.

The Makerspace is home to a variety of different sewing and craft opportunities. Check out our Creative Kits to see what else we have available that might interest you, such as our knitting machine. In addition, we have the following equipment:

singersewing We have six sewing machines available in the Makerspace for patrons to use, including the necessary accessories. Sewing Machines do not need to be reserved.

You do not need to make a reservation to use a sewing machine. Just stop by the Makerspace during Staffed Hours and we will help you. If you stop by to use a sewing machine during a time when the Makerspace is not staffed and you are knowledgeable about sewing, please check with the Adult Information Desk.

You can personalize clothing, baby blankets, bibs, bags and gifts with monograms, designs, and logos.

The embroidery machine can be used during our Staffed Hours. It is not necessary to reserve the equipment, this machine is for drop-in use only.

Makerspace Staff will need to assist you whenever you use this machine.

What is provided?

Janome MB -7 Embroidery Machine & Instructions

  • Embroidery Thread
  • Embroidery Hoops (sizes 2” x 2”, 5” x 4.3”, 5” x 8”)
  • Needles
  • Stabilizer
  • An iron
  • Test fabric
  • Cutting tools

 

What do I need to bring to use the Embroidery Machine?

You will need to bring the following:

  • The item you wish to embroider on.
  • A digital embroidery file in .jef format.
  • Scrap material for practice is helpful.

 

We cannot take files in any other format than .jef at this time.

Do I need training to be able to use this equipment?

You will need to have a very brief informal training with a member of our staff before using the machine. You will be trained on the following:

  • How to change the thread.
  • How to change the bobbin.
  • Basic menu navigation.
  • How to use the different embroidery hoops.
  • How to use stabilizer.

Makerspace Staff will need to assist you whenever you use this machine.

Is there a cost for using the Embroidery Machine?

We are unable to accommodate the use of personal embroidery thread and stabilizer. Please be advised that you will be charged for those materials which we provide.

Embroidery Thread:            10¢ per 1,000 stitches

Stabilizer:                                $1.00 per foot

Minimum price:                     $1.00

We are not able to accommodate the use of metallic thread.
